Maria Montessori observed that children learn best by doing things for themselves. When they are given the opportunity to learn basic knowledge and skills through their own interests, efforts and hands-on experience children develop easily, happily and thoroughly.

Our children are encouraged to take responsibility for their actions and develop confidence. They learn to trust their own ability to solve problems independently, not only for themselves, but also for others in their community.

Our teachers at each level have received excellent training from the Association Montessori Internationale. Many hours are spent learning how to observe children closely in order to respond to their needs, in addition to learning how and when to present each of the hundreds of activities and materials. The Montessori teacher’s priority is to “help the child to help himself.”

Our mission statement reflects our commitment to a holistic curriculum that is delivered in a well-prepared school. We provide a Montessori experience for children aged 18 months through 6 years and to respond to each child’s individual strengths and needs.

This mission is accomplished by

• Adhering to Montessori theory and practice as defined by the Association Montessori Inter-
   nationale (AMI).
• Recognizing the value of a curriculum-based early childhood education while meeting
   culturally based needs.
• Fostering an environment that helps children prepare themselves for life through in-
   dependence, critical thinking, respect and responsibility to self, to others, and to the Earth.
• Helping teachers, staff and parents to remain focused on this goal and not be sidetracked
   by adult agendas.
• Encouraging involvement of parents, teachers, students and the larger community.
• Supporting a learning community for all members, child and adult.

The Montessori philosophy is based on a profound respect for each child as a unique and capable human being. It is designed to support children as they gain skills and become increasingly independent in thought and action.
